Five Must Do Roadtrips from Sydney

14 January 2016

If you’re visiting the stunning Sydney and have some time up your sleeve after snapping shots outside the Sydney Opera House, climbing the Harbour Bridge and being a beach bum in Bondi these 5 places are great for beauty and beating the typical tourist spots. So grab a car, your favourite music playlist and enjoy.

Bowral and surrounds

Located in the Sydney’s Southern Highlands this is one of our favourite places to go when we’re in need of a small getaway. A main street and small cinema with some beautiful boutique retail stores plus the “Cherry Tree” walk which extends through the outskirts of town. So if you need to stretch those legs after a long day of driving this walk will surely do it.

Bowral is located between two other lovely towns that are about five minutes drive away. Berrima, to the south of Bowral, is smaller and more quaint. You could easily spend at least half day there browsing the small cafés and our favourite candy shop The Lolly Swagman. Just outside of Berrima is a restaurant called Berkelouw Book Barn and Café, if you want a tasty  bite while reading. Mittagong, to the north of Bowral is larger, with Lake Alexander you can walk around and a track to the back of the lake which takes you further into the bush to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Oberon

Located in the Central Tablelands of NSW. This town is on our list not because of the town itself but because of where it is located. On the way to Oberon you will drive through the Blue Mountains, be sure to check out the popular towns like Katoomba and Leura and yes do try the bushwalks there as they are some of the best bushwalks in NSW.

Terrigal

Part of the Central Coast located on top of Sydney’s famous Northern Beaches. Terrigal is a large suburb that has really only taken off for locals and Sydneysiders. You can spend a couple of days traversing up and down the coast looking at the beaches while eating at local cafés and restaurants which have some of the best seafood we have ever tried. The Central Coast is great for walks along the beach and taking to the air with hang gliding. A forty-minute drive inland takes you to Glenworth Valley an outdoor adventure centre where you could spend all day horse riding, quad biking, bushwalking, abseiling or kayaking.

Thirroul

Located in the South Coast of Sydney, near Wollongong, Thirroul is a larger suburb which is part of the city of Wollongong. We love exploring the outskirts of Wollongong: The Sea Cliff Bridge walk, Wollongong to Thirroul bike track and the famous Sublime point walking track which is a challenging walk located in a coastal rainforest. If you are coming down from the north make sure you take the scenic route through the Royal National Park. It’s not only a scenic and peaceful drive but it will also lead you through Grand Pacific Drive which is a famous driving route that follows along the edge of Australia connecting Sydney to Wollongong.

Bundeena

Bundeena is a suburb situated within the Royal National Park, the second oldest National Park in the world (after Yellowstone in the US) and is the starting area of some of the best coastal walks on NSW. You could easily spend a few weeks walking the tracks around the “RNP” but if you’re short on time there are plenty of day. Be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins and whales off the coast if you are visiting in the warmer months.
